BS 5395-1:2010
What is BS 5395-1:2010?
In the UK there are over 500 deaths and an estimated 250,000 non-fatal accidents from stair-related incidents. BS 5395-1 sets out a code of good practice for the design of straight-flight stairs and steps. This includes landings and winders for all types of buildings and industrial walkways. One of the most important aspects of stair design that has an impact on the safety of users is the tread dimensions. The standard covers steps and stairs outside buildings, spiral or helical stairs, industrial stairs, ramps, ladders, swimming pool steps and loft or basement stairs.

BS 5395-1 looks at all the safety factors that should be taken into account during the structural design of stairs. The standard defines best-practice dimensions, as well as durability and materials. It also explains slip resistance, noise control and lighting levels.
