What is BS 5395-1:2010?

Official BSI Distributor

In the UK there are over 500 deaths and an estimated 250,000 non-fatal accidents from stair-related incidents. BS 5395-1 sets out a code of good practice for the design of straight-flight stairs and steps. This includes landings and winders for all types of buildings and industrial walkways. One of the most important aspects of stair design that has an impact on the safety of users is the tread dimensions. The standard covers steps and stairs outside buildings, spiral or helical stairs, industrial stairs, ramps, ladders, swimming pool steps and loft or basement stairs.
